Why ex-pro Garland was rooting for Immelman

Trevor Immelman's victory at the Masters on Sunday brought a smile to the face of former local pro Chris Garland (pictured above) who has been following the South African's career since he became good friends with his brother, Mark, while both attended Columbus State University in Georgia.

Garland, formerly an assistant pro at the Mid Ocean Club and now a co-owner of Front Street restaurant/bar Flannagans, has kept in touch with Mark Immelman since the two played together on the college circuit and is now looking forward to meeting Trevor again when he arrives for the Grand Slam of Golf at Mid Ocean later this year.

"I hung out and played with Mark when we were at university and met Trevor a few times," recalled Garland yesterday.

"I remember Trevor as being very intense. He lived and breathed golf, and spent a lot of time practising.

"It's fantastic he's come this far."
