'A-Wackers' triumph

Over 100 players in 30 teams turned out for the 11th annual A.F. Smith Corporate Team Squash Tournament last week at the squash club in Devonshire.

First division honours went to the AWAC team, named The A-Wackers, who included Peter Cooper, Tom Quinn, Chris Silvester and Mike McCrimmon.

They totally dominated the Prime Product’s “Prime Suspects” in the final, winning the first five games in the best of nine match, to triumph in fine style.

AWAC were without their number one player Peter Cooper due to injury, forcing the remaining three players to move up a position in the team.

McCrimmon beat Peter Barrett 15-10, 15-14, 15-8, before Silvester defeated Bruce Robinson 15-12, 15-14, with the last game forfeited. Quinn then beat Henri Hanekom to seal a 9-0 victory for AWAC. The division one consolation produced a very contrasting final, when “Foreign Affair” narrowly defeated “Ricky, Canty and Jan” five games to four. Jan Brewer defeated Foreign Affair’s Tony Prentice 15-5, 14-15, 15-13, but 2-1 victories to Dan Bortoli (8-15, 15-5, 15-13) and Edwin Wickham (15-11, 15-11, 11-15) over Canty Corbin and Ricky Spence narrowly got the team home.

The second division final was another closely contested match, with “Marsh Symphony” edging out “The Older Ladies” 5-4. Marsh’s number one Stephen Drake got the team off to a good start — defeating Christine Barnes 15-5, 13-15, 15-8 — but then the Older Ladies fought back to level the tie when Kathy Keane got the crucial final point against Martin Burke 13-15, 15-11, 15-14. With everything tied up Marsh’s John Neal secured the match against Val Protheroe 15-5, 15-11, 11-15.

“L.O.M. Securities” were too strong for the “Three Stooges”, winning the division two consolation 8-1.
