BFA technical director chosen

The Bermuda Football Association has finally identified the man they want as their new technical director and plan to unveil him within the next few weeks.

President Larry Mussenden yesterday revealed the BFA were currently waiting for the unknown overseas candidate to agree to the terms of the $125,000 per annum position.

Last month The Royal Gazette exclusively revealed former Reggae Boyz coach Rene Simoes and ex-England striker Paul Mariner were no longer in the running for the vacancy.

Both high profile names had appeared on the BFA list of candidates, which also included Trinidadian Stephen Hart, a former Canada national team coach, and British Virgin Islands (BVI) technical director Ben Davies.

But while Mussenden remained tight-lipped on the technical director's identity he assured the public the BFA were "very close" to making an announcement.

"We're in the process of hiring the technical director and are awaiting a few developments before we communicate more information to the public," he said during a press conference called to present the BFA's second quarter report of Government funding.

"We're very pleased at the stage we are at. We're very close to making an appointment and an announcement is perhaps a couple of weeks away. It could be a few weeks after that before the (technical director's) start date.

"All those on our short-list came to Bermuda for interviews and we know the person we want."

Mussenden had affirmed the interview process for the technical director's post was complete when he unveiled Keith Tucker as national team coach back in November, and when asked if the delay was related to their man agreeing to the terms of the position, he replied: "Yes, it's on that basis."

The technical director will be pivotal in the association's ambitious multi-million dollar plan to revolutionise local football with the role far more grass-roots and club-orientated than before. It will also trigger the hiring of a youth director, a youth coordinator and fund development manager.

Last summer one of FIFA's top technical consultants, Alvin Corneal, arrived on the Island to make a thorough assessment of the current football infrastructure. The former Trinidadian international submitted his report to the BFA, which included recommendations regarding the appointment of the technical director.

Mussenden said the technical committee was still in the process of going through the report, but stressed it would be released into the public domain soon.

"At this point the technical committee are still looking at the report, but I anticipate it will publish some time soon," he said. "But I will need to confirm that with technical committee chairman Mark Trott.

"The BFA has no problem with the public seeing the report at the appropriate time."

Last February the Government announced its intention to pump an unprecedented $15 million into football, making the BFA the richest national sports governing body.
