A bizarre long-range goal by Robert Wilson after 54 minutes clinched victory for the Premier Division side Rams in this FA Cup preliminary round clash at Bernard Park yesterday.

It was from a seemingly harmless distance just inside the Parish half that Wilson unleashed what appeared to be more of a cross that baffled Nigel Burgess, catching the efficient 'keeper well off his goal line and ending up going in off the far post to the amazement of the big crowd.

But Burgess couldn't be labelled as the goat because it was largely his brilliance between the posts that prevented the Rams from underlying their supremacy from the very early stages.

While the Rams were to snatch the upper hand throughout, Burgess kept Parish in the contest, denying Keith Jennings and skipper Ralph Bean Jr. on numerous occasions.

In the first half, during a one on one with Bean, Burgess advanced to block the schemer and then in the second half, with the Rams having another clear-cut chance, he pulled off a dramatic save to thwart a blast by Jennings.

Parish had two misfortunes too with Jamie Smith blowing two chances, putting one at the goalkeeper and then guiding another over the bar.

It wasn't a real surprise when Rams took the lead through Wilson's strike but credit to Parish who still remained competitive with their fight and determination.

Rams lost forward Nakia Smith after 86 minutes when he was sent off by referee George O'Brien for allegedly swearing at a linesman, but by then victory had been virtually sealed by the home side.

A goal in the first half and then two more in the second gave home side Eagles a comfortable three-goal victory at White Hill.

But when it was over First Divisioners Eagles were rather relieved, realising that they had their hands full against their Commercial League opponents from the east.

Eagles sailed to victory with two strikes from Darren Dowling and a single strike from Giovoni Logi.
