Blyde stars as Police go top of the league

Police went to the top of the table with a hard-fought 15-7 victory over a beleaguered Renegades outfit at Malabar field last weekend. And in the second match, Teachers defeated Mariners 26-3.

Rising Police star Joel Blyde knocked over an easy penalty to give his side an early 3-0 lead. Renegades weathered an early onslaught and came back strongly, dominating territorially.

Connor McGlynn finally breached the Police defence to score a try and Paul Waldburger made the easy conversion to give Renegades a much deserved 7-3 lead.

Police responded well and reclaimed the lead when Blyde powered his way over the line for a converted try to make it 10-7. After the break, Renegades pinned back the Police defence but had only a missed Waldburger penalty to show for their efforts.

And Police managed to extend their lead after Police second row Mark Evans poached the throw in at a line-out and powered over to extend his side's lead to 15-7. Blyde missed the difficult conversion, but Police held out to win.

In the second match, Teachers' first try of the day came from a run by veteran Alvin Harvey, from which the ball was quickly recycled to young Ron Hook, who was tackled short of the line but he still managed, while lying on his back, to pop the ball up to Jean-Francios Mauvis, who crossed the line for a converted try. Harvey set up the second try with a pass to speedster Harry Andrews, who went over in the corner to make it 12-0. Mariners settled down and centre Ian Bowd broke through and was looking to score when Derek Hurdle stopped him in his tracks with an ugly looking high tackle. Hurdle was admonished by referee John Weale but he escaped a yellow card. Luke Millward slotted the penalty to close the gap to 12-3 just before the half.

In the second half, a spirited Mariners performance failed to glean any points, while Teachers added to their tally with further a second try for Andrews and another for David Porter, who made an interception and ran the length of the field to go over.

Four tries meant Teachers secured the bonus point with a 26-3 scoreline that was tough on Mariners.
