Boulevard's league title credentials put to test
Whether Boulevard’s quest for a first Premier Division league championship in 11 years holds any real substance will be put to the test tonight at Somerset Cricket Club when the current league leaders come up against second-placed Somerset Trojans.
Both teams have yet to taste defeat in league play and they clash in this weekend’s top match.
Blazers’ championship hopes gathered momentum last weekend with an inspiring win over Devonshire Cougars, while Trojans steamrolled Paget Lions to keep pace with their rejuvenated urban rivals.
Boulevard, who have a two-point lead over nearest rivals Trojans, will be bolstered by the return of young guns Angelo Simmons, Ian Coke and Dun-Ya Taylor for tonight’s pivotal clash.
The trio, along with Trojan’s Cofield Robinson, all returned to the Island on Monday with Bermuda’s Under-20 national squad from Haiti.
Trojans, who briefly led the league following last Saturday’s home win over Lions, will also be at full-strength and very keen on enhancing their very own chances of savouring a first league title since 1992-93.
Nothing separated these two teams the last time they met at Somerset Cricket Club, both ultimately having to settle for share of the spoils after battling to a scoreless draw.
Tonight’s Premier contest will be preceded by the Under-18 Junior League clash also involving Trojans and Blazers. Tomorrow Premier Division action continues at St. John’s Field where fifth-placed Dandy Town host defending champions North Village in a mid-table clash, and bottom club St. David’s host Martonmere Cup finalists PHC Zebras at Lords.
In First Division play, table-topping Ireland Rangers and Devonshire Colts should come away with convincing wins over Social Club at Malabar and whipping boys Hamilton Parish at Police Field tomorrow.
Third-placed Wolves will be looking to rebound from last weekend’s first loss of the season against league leaders Ireland Rangers when they travel to Garrison Field to take on X Roads.
Elsewhere, Prospect United could be in for a long afternoon against Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field, while St. George’s host Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval in what should be an evenly contested affair.
Meanwhile, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) announced yesterday that today’s Commercial A Division match involving Robin Hood and Dandy Town Roots and Commercial C contest between Dandy Town and Dockyard Falcons have both been postponed.
The Commercial B match between Prospect/Fire and Hamilton Parish has been cancelled as Parish have “pulled out” of the league.
BAA Field will be hosting a First Division Shield elimination round double-header next Tuesday.
Wolves meet Hamilton Parish in the night’s opening contest at 7 p.m., while X Roads tackle St.George’s Colts in the 9 p.m. nightcap.
