Budding tennis stars honoured

Honing their skills: Inter-school tennis tournament winners were put through their paces at the headquarters of ACE yesterday.

The winners of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association's (BLTA) inter-school tournament descended on ACE headquarters yesterday where their achievements were acknowledged.

Two dozen juniors who won their respective doubles competitions were invited to ACE's tennis court to demonstrate their prowess against some of the company's employees.

Now in its eighth year the inter-school tennis tournament, held last February and March and sponsored by ACE, is part of BLTA's schools programme that runs throughout the academic year in primary, middle and high schools. It allows students of all ages to enjoy tennis both recreationally and competitively in physical education (PE) lessons and through inter-school tournaments.

David Lambert, BLTA president, said through ACE's sponsorship qualified coaches had been appointed to work within the school system and with PE teachers, as well as fund tournaments three times a year. He added after-school tennis clubs for youngsters would soon to be up and running.

Lori Samson, from ACE, said: "The programme has exposed thousands of school children to tennis and has become an important component in the development of tennis in Bermuda."
