Bundy's try keeps Police top of league
Police survived a late Mariners onslaught to maintain their unbeaten record and stay top of the league.
Tries by Nick Superina and Warren Bundy gave this season's early pacesetters a 10-7 victory over unlucky Mariners, who suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.
Renegades came out on top in Saturday's second match, defeating Teachers 9-3 in a bad-tempered, try-less encounter.
Mariners were bolstered by the presence of visiting player Richard Berendt who plays in England for the Newcastle Falcons colts side, but the guest player was taken off in the second half with a suspected broken ankle.
It was Police who went ahead after an excellent short line-out set piece saw the ball plucked out of the air by Mark Robinson and a good series of driving mauls resulted in Superina driving over.
Mariners then piled on the pressure, but they went further behind, against the run of play, before the break.
Police's Jonathan Cassidy broke free and after expertly drawing his man, fed Ralshon Douglas. Douglas dashed over the half way line before feeding the supporting Bundy. Bundy proved too strong for the desperate covering defence and powered through two would-be tacklers to finish a thrilling, length-of-the-field move.
Mariners finally got on the scoreboard when Lars Jensen powered through a weak tackle to score in the corner. Richard Holden made the difficult conversion to close the gap to 10-7.
In the closing five minutes Mariners turned down two kickable penaltiesand their coach Joann Oosthuizen will find little consolation in the bonus point awarded to his side for losing by less than seven points.
Referee John Weale had his hands full in the second match of the day, in which Teachers and Renegades fought out a bad-tempered affair.
South African Paul Waldburger slotted over a penalty to give Renegades an early 3-0 lead, after Booby Hurdle was penalised for handling in the ruck.
From the ensuing kick-off the relentless Renegades pinned Teachers deep in their own half with some smart tactical kicking. Once again indiscipline cost the Reds when Andrew Hook was called up for being offside. Waldburger knocked over the 40-metre penalty to further his side's lead to 6-0.
Hook was later sin-binned for a cynical trip on Tom Healy which was spotted by eagle-eyed referee Weale. This needless penalty blotted an otherwise stellar performance by one of Bermuda's rising young stars. Waldburger failed to convert the penalty.
Teachers came back when Chris Naylor managed to knock over a mid-range penalty kick to close the gap to 6-3.
Discipline on both sides began to disintegrate and a stunned audience saw the first red card of the season issued to a truculent David Porter. The diminutive Porter lost his composure and was caught punching the robust Renegade prop Jessup Jones. Referee Weale had no choice but to send off Porter.
The game became a dour affair with a litany of handling errors and tempers flaring. When Renegades flanker Conrad Hichley was yellow-carded for flagrant and repeat offending, Teachers fought there way back into the game. But Naylor missed several kickable penalties that could have stolen the game for his side.
Renegades stand-off Waldburger struck a speculative drop goal to extend Renegades' lead to 9-3 and round off an ugly encounter.
• In ladies rugby action at Malabar, Julia Mansfield starred for Police, scoring four tries to help her side to a 5-1 victory over Mariners. Mariners fought to the end, getting a consolation try from Larrisa (Larry) Yivel. A silky smooth run by Rachael Black finished off the scoring for the Police.
In the second match Teachers earned top spot in the table with a 3-2 victory.
Kristie Koza finished a flowing move to open the scoring for Teachers and Jenny Crawford extended the Reds' lead to 2-0.
Melissa Field showed her lightning pace to score in the corner for Renegades, to close the margin to 2-1.
Amy Wright fed hard-charging Bermuda national soccer team star Chloe Martin to restore Teachers' two-try lead. But Renegades refused to capitulate and veteran Amy Harvey's fine weaving run closed the margin to 3-2 to set up a nail biting last two minutes but Teachers hung on to claim a deserved victory.
