Cup winners Wolves slip up
Through a combination of a hard work, solid defending for the most part and execution around the box, X Roads humbled their high-flying hosts to sneak away from the Den with a huge psychological win under their belts.
Wolves had the better of the earlier exchanges, but found themselves trailing at the half to Eugene Calder’s 39th-minute effort from close range.
A ball played over the top was left unattended by the Wolves defence, allowing Calder to slip through the back door and easily slot home.
Wolves must have felt hard done by at the break after creating plenty of chances only to come up empty handed.
Team stalwart Jermaine Douglas broke free down the middle, but his firmly struck shot was tipped over the bar. Wolves winger Russ Ford jr and Keemo Smith also had good looks at goal, but failed to capitalise.
X Roads doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half, former Southampton Ranger Nash Smith burying a shot from eight yards.
But the visitors were made to sweat it out to the end as Wolves plotted a late revival on the back of a Dane Simmons humdinger from an acute angle 10 minutes from time.
With both time and space at his disposal, Simmons rattled the back of the net with a blast from the top of the box that gave the ‘keeper absolutely no chance.
Rejuvenated, the home team threw numbers forward and reverted to playing the long ball over the top in the closing minutes in search of an equaliser. But their efforts proved fruitless as X Roads put up the shutters and held out for the win.
College-bound forward Ryan Purnell led Colts’ attack with two goals while Keimon Lawrence and Aljame Zuill scored the other two. Irving Burgess and Sean Dill netted for Parish.
Lawrence opened the scoring for Colts after 22 minutes but the lead was wiped out by Burgess’ goal nine minutes before the break.
Colts, though, should have ended the half with a comfortable lead but too many chances were wasted with the chief offender being forward Shannon Nusum who placed shots either wide or over the top when in goal-scoring positions.
Things were to change for Colts when play re-started with Purnell quickly giving them a 2-1 lead after 47 minutes and Zuill stretching it to 3-1 with a strike after 53 minutes.
Parish reduced the deficit to 3-2 through Dill after 62 minutes but Colts put the result out of reach with a fourth strike through Purnell after 73 minutes.
Parish finished up with ten players in the final five minutes after veteran Irving Burgess was sent off by referee Anthony Francis for allegedly used “insulting and abusive” language towards a linesman.
Andre Outerbridge, who opened the scoring, Junior DeSilva and Lemuel Weeks were all on target for Rangers.
Paving the way for Eagles’ second win of the season at Police Field was former Somerset Trojan Anthony Webb who netted the new year’s second hat trick.
Webb tallied in the 21st, 50th and 66th minutes before Jamal Salaam rounded off the scoring late in the second half.
Prospect, who earlier led, replied through Dennis Joell and Darrin Harvey.
St.George’s Colts 4<$>St.George’s produced one of their best performances of the season to come away with maximum points over Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.
Jarreau Hayward converted twice and Kuma Smith and Tre Houston grabbed the other goals for the east Enders.
