<Bt4z28>Dudley Eve Cup places up for grabs this weekend
Final Dudley Eve Champions Cup places could be decided in the Premier Division this weekend as the 2006-07 football season nears the halfway stage.
This season’s Dudley Eve competition, honouring the memory of the late Bermuda Football Association stalwart, commences on December 19. And, as it presently stands, six teams still stand a mathematical chance of qualifying.
League leaders Boulevard — who have yet to be really tested this season — second-placed North Village, third-placed and defending Dudley Eve champions Devonshire Cougars and fifth-placed Somerset Trojans all have the inside track — given they have multiple games in hand over fourth-placed Dandy Town.
Sixth-placed PHC also have two games in hand they cannot afford to lose in order to keep their Dudley Eve hopes alive. But they are difficult ones, both on the road, against Trojans tonight (9 p.m.) at Somerset Cricket Club and Village at Bernard Park.
Town, who play their final league match of the first half of the season against Blazers tomorrow at the Barn, must win at all cost and then rely on others if they are to stand any chance of making a third straight appearance in the festive double elimination tournament involving the top four teams from the Premier and First Divisions at the halfway stage of the season.
However, a Trojans victory over Zebras tonight coupled with a Blazers win over Town tomorrow would effectively earn Boulevard, Cougars, Village and Trojans qualification to this season’s Dudley Eve Champions Cup.
Cougars are heavily favoured over winless St. David’s at Lords tomorrow while Village, likewise, should prove too much for fast-fading Paget Lions to handle at White Hill Field.
With unbeaten First Division leaders Ireland Rangers and defending Dudley Eve First Division champions Wolves having already qualified for next month’s tournament, third-placed Devonshire Colts, fourth-placed Southampton Rangers, fifth-placed Prospect United and sixth-placed X Roads have been left to challenge for the remaining two spots.
Southampton Rangers host Prospect at Southampton Oval, St. George’s welcome Ireland Rangers to Wellington Oval while X Roads host Somerset Eagles at Garrison Field. Elsewhere, Devonshire Colts host cup holders Wolves at Police Field and Social Club take on winless Hamilton Parish at Bernard Park.
