Dudley Eve race goes down to the wire

It will be a case of do or die for three Premier Division teams tomorrow as the race for the remaining Dudley Eve spots goes down to the wire.

With league leaders PHC Zebras and North Village having qualified for the festive cup competition last weekend, it now remains to be seen who will join them after all is said and done tomorrow.

Cougars, Hornets, Blazers and Colts are all currently level on eight points with only one match to go before the Christmas recess and in need of a win to keep their Dudley Eve hopes alive.

Third-placed Cougars (plus four) presently lead Town (plus three), Boulevard (minus two) and Colts (plus one) on goal difference and with an appetizing home encounter with league whipping boys Ireland Rangers at the Den tomorrow, Cougars appear to have an easier path to Dudley Eve qualification.

Blazers may also find Somerset Trojans - booted out of the FA Cup in midweek - easy pickings at Somerset Cricket Club as John Rebello's men look to rebound from a recent drubbing at the expense of Kyle Lightbourne's galloping Zebras.

The same, however, cannot be said for Hornets and Colts who will run the gauntlet against PHC and Rams on home soil.

Town's Ottis Steede and Antwon Russell will be reunited with their former Zebras team-mates when PHC travel to St.John's tomorrow. But PHC can hardly expect a warm reception as Hornets will be fighting off the ropes to keep their own Dudley Eve hopes intact.

Likewise, inaugural Dudley Eve winners Colts must also come away from Bernard Park with nothing short of maximum points if they are to showcase their skills over the holiday break.

Meanwhile, the race for Dudley Eve qualification in the First Division is also close with league leaders Hamilton Parish the only team so far having secured a berth in the holiday competition.

Pacesetters Hot Peppers currently top the pile with 20 points while only five points separate second-paced Southampton Rangers from fifth-placed Wolves - the two-time defending Dudley Eve champions - who have a game in hand with Rangers next Tuesday night at the Den.

Parish will rest their impressive unbeaten record on the line against high-flying Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field, fellow promotion hopefuls St.David's entertain Social Club at Lords while Wolves host St.George's Colts at the Den.

Elsewhere, either Paget or BAA should chalk up a first league win of the season when the two cellar dwellers lock horns at White Hill Field while Prospect United take on X Roads at Police Field.

Southampton Rangers have a bye this weekend.
