Ex-US athletes in Bermuda for coaching clinics
Former world-ranking track and field star David Oliver and Olympic head coach Brooks Johnson are in Bermuda to promote the 8th annual West End Athletic Club (WEAC) Schools Track and Field Challenge.
Sponsored by The Bank of Bermuda Foundation, the Challenge kicks off on April 5 at the National Sports Centre.
Participating athletes will be invited to attend a special training clinic with Oliver and Johnson.
Johnson, who sits in the US Track and Field Hall of Fame, is internationally recognised for his coaching, and boasts Oliver as an ex-pupil.
"I am really looking forward to introducing David Oliver and Brooks Johnson to the participants", WEAC president, Anthony Raynor said.
"It will be a great opportunity to have two world-class track and field athletes available to coach and inspire our young athletes."
Training clinics will be held March 28 at 4.30 p.m. and March 29 at 10 a.m. at the NSC.
The annual Challenge attracts hundreds of children each year, with each school allowed to enter one team of a maximum 16 athletes.
The students will compete in a variety of events from discus to 4X400 relay team, with points awarded to all finishers.
The top three schools with the highest number of points for Primary, Middle and Senior school levels will receive cash prizes.
The Bank of Bermuda Foundation's Event Shield is also presented to the school with the most points overall.
A ceremony will be held after the Challenge.
Last year a total 14 schools competed in the event with Sandy's Middle School claiming the top prize.
