Fletcher's Carifta gold a first for Bermuda
Julian Fletcher captured Bermuda's first-ever gold medal at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Aruba on Saturday night.
Fletcher won the senior boys' 50 metres breaststroke final with a superb swim, clocking 31.05 seconds.
Bermuda then grabbed another medal - a silver - as Ashley Yearwood placed second in the final of girls' 200 metres butterfly.
Yearwood renewed her rivalry with Kimberlee John Williams of Trinidad and Tobago with the two swimming side by side through the entire race. But it was the Bermudian who surged ahead on the final lap to take the silver in 2:36.56, knocking six seconds off her previous best time.
A day earlier she had chopped an incredible sixteen seconds from her previous PB in the same 13 -14 age group.
Bermuda's third medal of the night came in the 4x100 freestyle relay as the quartet of Eleanor Gardner, Rebecca Heyliger, Rebecca Sharpe and Nicole Yearwood picked up the bronze, who had earlier smashed the existing age group and Bermuda record by eight seconds which had previously been set eight years ago in the same pool.
The four came together in an excellent display of team-work as they battled it out with the teams from Bahamas and the French Antilles for the medals.
In Saturday's morning heats, Gardner and Heyliger swam in the senior girls' 50 metres freestyle and advanced to last night's final.
In doing so, they also both qualified for the FINA World Youth Championships in Monterrey, Mexico this July.
Also due to compete in last night's finals was Fletcher in the 100 metres breaststoke as he seeks to medal in all of the breaststroke events.
In Friday night's finals, Rebecca Sharpe converted her top seed position in the senior girls' 100 metres backstroke into a silver medal with a new age group record.
Sharpe carved 3.5 seconds off her previous best to earn her spot on the podium, with Bahamian sensation McKayla Lightbourne narrowly beating her at the finish.
The meet was scheduled to end last night.
