Jennings' penalty secures the points

PhoPressure: North Village goal scorer Keith Jennings pursues Dandy Town's Dennis Zuill in the clash at St. John's Field that ended 1-0.

Dandy Town 0North Village 1A superbly taken Keith Jennings penalty at St. John's Field yesterday kept things tight at the top of the Premier Division.Jennings calmly converted from the spot to seal this city derby after team-mate Sammy Degraff was hacked down in the box as he shaped up to shoot. The win keeps Rams breathing down the neck of league leaders PHC Zebras and firmly on course for a potential second league title in three seasons. But other than Jennings' winner, those who braved yesterday's cooler conditions had little else to get excited about as the match itself fizzled into a scrappy affair with neither team able to really stamp their authority on the pitch. It was the second straight week the two teams had met, with Rams coming out on top on each occassion."We always battle against Dandy Town and obviously for us this was another very important game," Rams coach Elliott Jennings said. "It's a good victory and overall I was pleased with our effort today on a pitch like this."I thought the guys played smart and in the end did what they had to in order to come away with the goods."Hosts Town had ample opportunities to lift themselves back into the match after falling behind midway through the first-half. But whenever opportunity came knocking at the door Hornets' frontmen shied away from goal as though it was radioactive."We didn't look like we wanted to score. And if you don't score you're not going to win matches," Town coach Devarr Boyles lamented. "I think we are lacking confidence in and around goal."Town actually looked the better side during the early stages with striker Lynn Tucker poking holes in a Reds defence that also had difficulty containing the threat of Lloyd Holder who went close with a powerful header that soared past the upright. At the other end a lethargic Village attack was slowly coming to life with one always sensing the momentum was about to change until tempers boiled over during a Hornets raid on goal with Town's Tucker and Village's Kofi Dill having to be prised apart and booked before cooler heads finally prevailed. The incident seemed to jolt Village into action and they would take the lead for good in the 25th minute when Degraff was sent sprawling in the box after Keith Jennings had sliced open the Hornets' defence with a threaded pass.Jennings made no mistake with his spotkick, stuffing the ball straight down the middle into the roof of the net as Mikkail Crockwell, son of former top ref Stuart Crockwell, guessed incorrectly in diving to his right.Crockwell was also kept busy between the 'sticks after the break as Rams threatened to put the match away.Keishan Bean didn't enjoy one of his better performances and neither did his captain Ralph Bean as both players squandered golden opportunities with the goal at their mercy. Not to be outdone, defender Robert Wilson, who battled on with a bloodied nose after taking a jab in the face, also made a hash of a breakway with only Crockwell to contend with.Hornets were a completely different bunch in the second-half but still did enough to come away from the match with at least a share of the spoils. But Holder's disallowed 59th minute strike didn't help matters any as Rams were let off the hook.Boyles went for broke during the latter stages in an all out bid to salvage something from the match by tossing Antwan Russell and Heys Wolfe into the fray. And his decision nearly paid off as Russell raced towards goal with only national team 'keeper Jason Williams to beat. But to Village's relief Russell hesitated to unleash, enabling Williams to scramble off his line to protect a clean sheet, and keep Village thick in the hunt for what is shaping up to be a close championship race with five- matches left to play.Dandy Town: M.Crockwell, D.Zuill (capt) (L.Dill, 65 mins), K.Lathan, E.Signor, K.Simmons, O.Steede, M.Parsons, S.Smith, S.Darrell, L.Holder (A.Russell, 70 mins), L.Tucker (H.Wolfe, 70 mins).North Village: J.Williams, R.Wilson, M.Hansey, K.Dill, R.Spence, J.Boyles, J.Jennings, K.Jennings, S.Degraff, R.Bean (capt), K.BeanYellow cards: O.Steede, L.Tucker, A.Russell (Town); K.Dill, R.Bean, J.Jennings (Village)Men of the match: M.Crockwell (Town); K.Dill (Village)Referee: George O'Brien.
