Lewis enjoying new lease on life
Stanton Lewis is enjoying a new lease on life since returning to high-flying Boulevard at the beginning of the season.
The 32-year-old defender nodded home Blazers’ winner against Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club on Wednesday night. And it was goal he described as “one of his best in the top flight” — sending Boulevard six points clear at the top of the Premier Division at the halfway stage of the season.
“I’m not normally in those types of positions, but it was one of those things that came my way and I took it.
“I actually told one of my strikers to stand still and used as a pick. The ball was flighted perfectly and all I did was simply follow up on it,” Lewis told The Royal Gazette.
The national team defender rejoined Blazers having returned to PHC Zebras — where he won FA Cup, Premier Division championship, Charity Cup and Dudley Eve titles — for one season last year.
Only few recall Lewis growing up in the Happy Valley area of Pembroke before moving across the harbour to Warwick. Lewis’ late mother, Christine, also grew up in Pembroke.
“A lot of people don’t realise this . . . but I lived in Happy Valley until I was about five years old,” Lewis added.
The Warwick Academy PE teacher attributes Blazers’ current success to maturity.
“These guys have matured, they’re a bit more disciplined and above all they want to win. There is also a lot of harmony right now in the team and it definitely feels great to be a part of this,” he said.
“These guys have grown and hopefully we can get some silverware this season. And it’s very pleasing to see everyone happy and smiling again in the community.
“Now all you hear people talking about is Boulevard and it has actually brought the community closer.”
Boulevard have already etched their name in the history books as the first team to to take 19 points in the first half of the season from a maximum of 21. They lead Somerset Trojans by six points.
With Lewis at the heart of their defence alongside the returning Jahmah Samuels, Blazers have conceded only six goals.
They take on North Village tomorrow at the Den in the Friendship Trophy and then lock horns with Trojans next Friday in their opening Premier Dudley Eve Cup at Somerset Cricket Club.
