Looking to avenge nine-wicket humbling

Bermuda's Stanford 20/20 squad will pay their respects to murder victim and avid cricket fan Vaughn Fubler ahead of tomorrow's clash with Jamaica at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

Bermudian Fubler was gunned down in his sleep in St. Mary, Jamaica nearly a week ago along with his 32-year-old girlfriend.

Bermuda departed for the land of wood and water yesterday and will hit the ground running with a 20/20 clash against Jamaica's national 20/20 team that will be without West Indies pair Jerome Taylor and Chris Gayle.

It will be the tourists' first taste of competitive cricket since last fall's humbling tour of Kenya and Dubai.

"This is going to be our first time actually batting on a turf wicket in awhile and so right away it's going to be another learning curve," said skipper Irving Romaine. "So we will be at a disadvantage going directly into a game in hot conditions without having practised out in the middle at home first."

With big hitters Dean Minors and Janeiro Tucker out of the squad, the onus has now fallen on the likes of Lionel Cann, James Celestine, David Hemp, Ricardo Brangman, Sammy Robinson and Romaine to come good with the bat.

"Hopefully at least two of us can come together and put up a big score," Romaine said.

The tourists will also be relying on their bowlers to pull their own weight in hopes of avenging a crushing nine-wicket loss to the Jamaicans at the inaugural Stanford 20/20 in 2006.

Bermuda have pinned their hopes on a four-pronged seam attack with the larger than life Dwayne Leverock, Garvin Aparcio, Ray Butterfield and Romaine to tend to spin bowling duties.

"We can compete and the guys should do well," Romaine said. "But our bowlers will really have to put something into their bowling in order to get something out of it."

The squad also contains a few genuine all rounders such as Somerset's Jacobi Robinson.

"Jacobi likes the big occasion and hopefully he comes through for us on the day. He has the talent to hit the ball far as well as get wickets," Romaine said.

Bermuda have also gone with five colts in Butterfield, MacLaren Smith, Traddie Simpson, Brangman and Aparcio.

Glamorgan skipper Hemp will miss tomorrow's match as he is due to arrive in Jamaica next Monday.

Bermuda are also scheduled to take on a Jamaican League XI in two 20/20 contest next week before arriving in Antigua February 7.

Bermuda: Irving Romaine (capt), Sammy Robinson, Dwayne Leverock, Lionel Cann, David Hemp, Ricardo Brangman (wk), Ryan Steede, Traddie Simpson, Jacobi Robinson, James Celestine, Garvin Aparcio, Ray Butterfield, MacLaren Smith.
