New format for Island's top cycling race

Changes are being planned for this year's Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race on May 24 as organisers look to make the event more exciting.

"This year we intend to make the race more exciting for the public, more heart pumping for the participants and a maximum bang for the sponsors", said race director Karl Outerbridge.

The race is considered the top event on the local cycling calendar and is named in memory of one the Island's top riders.

"With the use of chip timing we intend to achieve our objectives," said Outerbridge. "The chip timing will then allow us to include bonus finish lines in between the start and finish of the race.

"The best locations for the lines will be Fort Scaur, Port Royal gas station, the South and Middle Road junction, the top of Burnt House Hill, Bamboo Gate and the Flag Pole.

"This will help spectators by allowing the announcer to broadcast the results and split times as the riders cross each finish line .

"This will be the ultimate test for the cyclist who can recover the quickest or who can just ride away from the pack, get the bonus points and the victory."

"There will also be cameras mounted on the bikes to capture the action," Outerbridge continued. "The sponsors will get to have each finish line branded in their trade mark. For example, if it is a business that offers multiple goods or services, each finish line can be named after that product or service with samples or material to hand out."

Also planned for the future are TV screens in designated spots in order that spectatorscan see the race 'live' as it progresses.

Last year the race was won by Neil De St Croix as he broke away from the pack near the finish to steal the glory.
