PHC Raiders join aid effort for striken junior Dakarai

PHC Raiders have come to the aid of 15-year-old Warwick Academy student Dakarai Tucker, now fighting for his life and in a coma in a US hospital.

Tucker, son of former Southampton Rangers and PHC Raiders defender Stephen Tucker, was air lifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore last week after it was discovered he had ruptured a blood vessel in his brain.

In a touching gesture members of commercial division side Raiders have pledged to raise money to help offset Tucker's rising medical costs, with senior player Keith Bell urging his team-mates to rally for the cause.

"Stephen (Tucker) is one of us and so I'm asking for everybody to bring a sizeable monetary donation," Bell said.

Under 17 national team defender Tucker began his career at PHC before transferring to The Academy four seasons ago.

He also represented Bermuda at last year's Clyde Best Invitational Youth Tournament and the Dallas Cup in the US.

Tucker's health had taken an unfortunate turn for the worse earlier this month following a weekend of football with club side The Academy, with the teenager having to be rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and eventually sent overseas for further treatment.

Since news of Tucker's ordeal first broke, donations have poured in and prayer vigils held.

"At the moment all we can do is pray," Tucker's uncle Bruce DeGrilla, speaking on behalf of the family, told The Royal Gazette.

A bank account titled 'Dakarai Tucker's Medical Expenses Account' has now been opened at the Bank of Butterfield for all members of the general public who may be interested in making a donation to assist the young student, who has been described by his peers and teachers as "well-rounded, good natured and humorous."
