Rams mourn death of clubman
North Village Community Club (NVCC) are mourning the death of administrative stalwart Wendell (Sachin) Lindsay who passed away earlier this week following a long bout with illness.
Lindsay is a former Social Club, Centaurs United and North Village defender who up until the time of his death had served as assistant secretary at NVCC.
The late sports administrator was also a decent cricketer who devoted much of his spare time either playing or managing Village's commercial cricket team. He was also a big fan of Indian Test batsman Sachin Tendulkar and could often be heard bragging about the star batsman whenever the opportunity presented itself.
"Wendell was known by many as Sachin Tendulkar, that was a nickname that we had given to him because he was quite a good cricketer but also a first-class administrator," NVCC president Shervin Dill fondly recalled.
Dave Carruthers, Commercial Cricket League secretary and treasurer, added: "Wendell was a stalwart of the Commercial League's organising committee for several years and had taken on the responsibility of organising pitches and umpires, using his extensive knowledge of the Bermuda sporting scene.
"He'll be a huge loss to the Commercial League and, of course, to the North Village Community Club."
Lindsay also dabbled in football at Village playing under Harold (Doc) Dowling in his younger years before moving to nearby Social Club Bluebirds and now defunct Centaurs United. The late footballer's son, Jairzinho Simmons, is a current member of Village's Premier side.
"Even though I believe cricket was Wendell's first love he was also a hard-tackling central defender," Village chief Dill recalled. "He was a very committed player and his passing has left many to mourn.
"Wendell was an administrative stalwart who was largely responsible for recent Government grants we received to help upgrade our facility at Bernard Park. He put together a lot of the administrative requirements we had to present to Government. Wendell took the lead on that type of stuff.
"Wendell is going to be sadly missed by the entire North Village family and we would like to take this opportunity to extend our most sincere condolences to his family and friends."
Meanwhile, Devonshire Colts have also been left to mourn this week following the recent passing of former club and well-known businessman Kirk Bartram who suited up for Colts in the 1970s and 80s.
Speaking on behalf of his club, Devonshire Colts acting president Lee Holder yesterday expressed his sympathy and offered his condolences to the family of the late Colts footballer.
"Devonshire Colts extends its sincerest condolences and expresses its support and comfort during these moments of bereavement," he said.
