Raring to go for the Match of the Century
It's just a few days until I dust off the cobwebs and turn out for a Rest of the World XI against an England XI at the City of Manchester Stadium — to be honest I can't wait.
Its been called the Match of the Century, celebrating 100 years of the Professional Footballers' Association, and I've tried to get myself in the best shape possible by playing for North Village Rams. I reckon I can still be a goal poacher but only in slow motion these days — I'll probably look a bit like the Matrix!
I'm really excited about it and it will be great to run out in front of a big crowd again and get the old adrenalin going. They've put on a few light training sessions for us prior to the game, which should be a great experience considering the likes of Gianfranco Zola, Ian Rush, Roy Keane, Marcel Desailly and my boyhood hero Ruud Gullit are playing for my team.
I really hope Gullit's still able to make it as he's recently been appointed coach of David Beckham's LA Galaxy. He was a role model for me a youngster growing up and while he may not remember it, we've actually met before.
After Holland won Euro '88 Gullit came to Bermuda on holiday, which I got wind of and made it my mission to track him down and get his autograph. I spent an entire day knocking on people's doors until I found out his whereabouts in Tucker's Town. I was around 16 at the time and playing for North Village.
It was just before my Manchester United trials and I remember talking to him about that and him wishing me luck — it's funny how things turn out sometimes. It would be good to have another chat to him and to see if he remembers.
The match is on Sunday at 5 p.m (Bermuda time) and I'm hoping to take in Manchester City's game at Wigan beforehand. My old team has made a great start to the season under Sven-Goran Eriksson, who will also be coaching the Rest of the World XI. Considering the calibre of names involved with Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Jay Jay Okocha, I expect there should be a crowd of at least 30,000, which is a bit more than what I've been used to in recent weeks with around 30 watching the Rams!
But I guess it's like riding a bike and I'll soon get used to it again. There should be quite a few City fans attending so I might even get a "Feed the Goat" chant if I'm lucky.
The money raised from the match will be used to fund a new rehabilitation and physiotherapy unit for children at the University Children's Hospital in Manchester, so it's for a great cause and one I'm proud to be part of.
