Record breaker Ashley achieves five-race sweep

Ashley Yearwood on her way to winning five age group races in the Winter Age Group Championships.

Ashley Yearwood swept all five of her races in the 11 and 12 girl's age group, to take the high points trophy in the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association's Mailboxes Unlimited Winter Age Group Championships.

She also reset three of her own age group records in the process, lowering her times in the 100 and 200 metres butterfly and the 400 metres individual medley.

More than 80 local swimmers were vying for the honour of capturing the high points trophies in their respective age groups in the event, which was held over three sessions earlier this month.

Other swimmers scoring the maximum points in taking their respective age group high points trophies were Mitchell Gariepy in the eight-and-under boys, Philip Hagen in the nine-and-10 boys and Alexander Brown in the 13-and-14 boys.

Age group records were also set in the 15-and-16 age group by Nicole Yearwood, in the girls 400 metres individual medley; Eleanor Gardner, in the girls 200 metres butterfly and Denzel Wellman, in the boys 200 metres butterfly.

The Winter Age Group Championships was the last meet of the calendar year, with competition restarting in early February.

Young swimmers will be attempting to meet the standards set for overseas competitions, such as the Carifta swimming championships, to be hosted by Aruba in March, and the FINA World Youth Championships, to be held in Monterrey, Mexico in July.

In the interim, and to prepare for these competitions, there will be an intense training camp held over the school Christmas vacation.
