Scots take heart from Italy's laboured win

MARSEILLE (Reuters) ¿ There was relief all round in the Italy camp at having overcome a dogged Romania to seal their first win of the World Cup.

It will be Scotland, however, who will take most heart from a laboured win on Wednesday that showed the Azzurri are a mere shadow of the side that beat them in this year's Six Nations.

The Scots face Italy in the final match in Pool C on September 29 with the runners-up spot behind the All Blacks and a place in the quarter-finals most likely to be the prize at stake.

Italy appeared to have put the memory of their 76-14 destruction at the hands of the All Blacks behind them when second row Santiago Dellape burst across the line in the sixth minute but they were unable to press home their advantage.

It was Romania who played the more spirited and determined rugby for much of the game, taking the lead early in the second half with two quick-fire tries only to throw away their chance of victory through ill-discipline and inexperience.

"It was an ugly match. Difficult," centre Mirco Bergamasco told reporters. "We were coming from a very complicated match that we lost four days ago. We were lacking in freshness, but the positive thing is that we came back from behind to win this match. I think we repeated the same mistakes we made in the past and we are going to have to solve them if we are to qualify for the quarter-finals. But at least we've found the spirit we were looking for and we got the win." For Romania, the narrow defeat and resulting bonus point was a better result than many predicted.
