Sims eager to bounce back

Michael Sims (above) will attempt to make his second Nationwide Tour cut of the season when he joins a top class field in California this week for the $625,000 Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship.

A triple-bogey seven on the 13th hole of the Le Triomphe Country Club in Louisiana last Friday put paid to Sims’ hopes of making it through to the weekend at the Lousiana Open.

But the Island’s top golfer will be seeking to make amends on the 7,185-yard course near the town of Livermore as he goes in search of some much-needed prize money, having made just $1,307 after four events — leaving him tied for 170th on the Tour money list.

The one cut Sims has made so far was in Australia late last month at the Jacob’s Creek Open, where after a first-round 67 (five-under) he only just qualified for the weekend after a disappointing second round of 75.

Two successive scores of 76 then left him near the bottom of the field in a tie for 60th at the Kooyonga Club in Adelaide and he conceded afterwards that while he has shown flashes of his undoubted talent during his first year on the Nationwide Tour, his long-running problems with consistency remain an issue.

The 2005 Bermuda Open champion’s best showing of 2007 so far came at the Colombia Masters, where he picked up a cheque for over $11,000 after finishing tied for third at the Tour de las Americas event.
