Sims makes the cut

Made the cut: Michael Sims

Micheal Sims carded an impressive three-under-par 69 to make the cut at the $475,000 Chattanooga Classic in Tennessee yesterday.

Three birdies on the back nine and another two on the front at the 7,040-yard, par-72 Black Creek layout saw the Bermudian finish yesterday's second round at 140, four-under-par for the tournament, tied for 55th.

It was the ninth time this year Sims, who turned pro in 2002, has made the cut on the Nationwide Tour.

"I am pleased with way I am playing at the moment. I hit the ball really good and gave myself plenty of opportunities. And that's all you can really ask for," he told The Royal Gazette.

Starting the day on the back nine at one under tied for 91st, the University of Rhode graduate misread what should have been a routine five- foot putt to card a bogey at the par four tenth.

But Sims regathered his poise with the putter and drained birdies at the 11th, 17th and 18th holes to breathe life into the round and make the turn at two-under.

Sims, who has pocketed $42,853 in career earnings so far, dropped another shot when he lipped out for a bogey at the 431-yard, par four second hole.

But birdies at the par five fourth and sixth holes saw to it that Sims would not be denied a shot at a potentially lucrative payday.

American Scott Sterling currently leads the field at 13-under-par heading into today's penultimate round.
