Sims reflects on struggle Down Under

Michael Sims admitted yesterday he was a "little disappointed" with his performance at the $600,000 Jacob's Creek Open in Australia after having got off to a flying start.

Sims only just made the cut in the Nationwide Tour event after a first round 67 was followed by a second round of 75, and then he proceeded to slip further down the leaderboard with identical closing rounds of four-over-par 76.

He eventually finished in a tie for 60th out of 64 players who made the cut on the 6,794-yard, par-72 Kooyonga Club course in Adelaide.

And he conceded that finishing near the bottom of the pile was a bitter pill to swallow following his third-place finish at the Colombia Masters in Bogota earlier this month.

"I was a little disappointed with the finish. I just felt really uncomfortable over the ball and struggled with my ball striking," the 28-year-old lamented.

Still, Sims was able to take something away from Down Under.

"The positive for the week was that I did have a great round to start off the tournament, and I also made the cut," he said.

"The first day I hit the ball really well. To me that was the big difference."

"But the next three days were really tough for me as I didn't feel comfortable over the ball. So it was a struggle although I did make some really good putts."

As a small consolation, the Bermudian pro collected $1,242 for his efforts after making his first cut since joining the Nationwide Tour.

"The golf course was really in mint shape," he added. "The greens were perfect while the fairways were tight. The golf course was really awesome."

Sims will now take the short hop over to New Zealand to compete in this week's $600,000 HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship with hopes of improving upon his performance in Australia.

The Belmont Hills touring pro, meanwhile, paid tribute to this year's Male and Female Athlete of Year Award winners Tyler Butterfield (cycling) and Flora Duffy (triathlon).

"I think it's great that Tyler won. It is always great to see other Bermudian athletes compete and have success on the highest levels around the world," said Sims, who himself had been tipped to take the top award.

"It takes hard work and dedication and it shows in his (Butterfield) results. So I would like to congratulate both of them on their achievements."
