Somerset hero Best returns as an opponent
North Village assistant coach Clyde Best can hardly expect a warm reception when he turns up at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow for Rams' Premier Division clash with Trojans.
As a son of the soil, and one of the key cogs in dominant Trojans teams of yesteryear, Best was a celebrated hero.
Tomorrow he will be among the enemy, however, as Trojans seek to overturn a humiliating 5-0 home drubbing at the hands of a merciless Village last February.
"Things have changed from many years ago, but it's not as though I am going to Manchester United where you have 80,000 people shouting at you at Old Trafford. So I am not worried because I can handle all of that," Best said.
"It's not about me. . . it's about the team. And the important thing is for the team to go out there, settle down and do what they have to do.
"And we are not concerned about them (Trojans) but more about what it is we have to do."
While league leaders Rams have been firing on all cylinders, the same cannot be said for Trojans, whose coach Dennis Brown lashed out earlier this week at his goal-shy strikers who have failed to hit the target in 180 minutes of football. "We are like we are in another world up front," Brown complained. "We just have to pick things up offensively."
Also in the West End, division newcomers Ireland Rangers host in-form PHC at Malabar — a team they upset two seasons ago.
Zebras handed league champions Devonshire Cougars a 2-1 loss at the Den in their previous league outing and in midweek qualified for a second straight Martonmere Cup final with a 1-0 win over Trojans at the same venue.
Rangers, who held Trojans to a 1-1 draw in their season opener, found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 peppering against Rams at Bernard Park.
Dandy Town Hornets will renew their fierce rivalry with promoted Devonshire Colts at St. John's Field, while league champions Cougars — yet to earn their first league points of the season — are away to Boulevard at BAA Field tonight.
In weekend First Division action, BAA host Southampton Rangers in tonight's curtain raiser at BAA Field, while tomorrow sees Prospect taking on high-flying Somerset Eagles at Police Field and X Roads and St. George's Colts locking horns in a East End derby at Garrison Field.
Elsewhere, rejuvenated Hamilton Parish will look to continue their winning ways against St. David's at Lords, with Social Club hosting Wolves at Bernard Park.
