Speedster Richards earns podium finish
Bermudian motorcycle racer Antoine Richards came from the back of the field to earn himself a Champions Cup Series podium finish in Florida last weekend.
The 20-year old 750cc Expert Supersport rider averaged speeds of 120 miles per hour at the two-mile long Jennings GP race track, surpassing his previous best showing (fifth) in the US to get his season back on track following a disappointing showing at the same venue last month.
Son of the soil Greg Melka took the chequered flag.
Richards warmed up for Sunday's race by shaving a second off his average lap time the day before during practice, and then carried on in the same vein when racing began in earnest in hot and humid conditions.
The local rider, who is sponsored by Trent Construction and Consul Distribution, started in the last row but methodically worked his way through the field.
"I made a lot of clean passes on a very tactical track and was passing either in mid-corner or coming out of the corner hitting the throttle down hard," Richards said.
"I had the throttle down and managed to get all the way up to second place with only six laps to go.
"The leader (Melka) had already checked out and I was just happy to be in second because it was a real battle getting there. He's been racing at the track for years and years.
"He actually gave me some pointers and to finish second behind him was a big accomplishment because this guy has been winning championship for years.
"For some reason the track was slippery, but that was a problem everyone encountered and I was actually able to keep control of the bike."
Richards is scheduled to return to the Jennings GP race track this weekend where he will be joined by fellow countryman Jevaughn Simons who is the current CCS 600cc Superstock Novice points leader.
"Jevaughn is coming out for the race and we are going to practice together," he said.
"We are not going to be competing against each other, but I plan to learn a bit from him while he can learn something from me."
