'Streaker' Adams is possible 'keeper

Legendary Bermuda goalkeeper Dwayne 'Streaker' Adams is gunning for a surprise start against Cayman Islands - almost 20 years since making his international debut.

The veteran 'keeper is back in training with the national team and has not returned to merely be the next cab in the rank behind Timmy Figuerido and Jason Williams.

Adams, 34, has been rolling back the years with Devonshire Cougars in recent weeks and coach Keith Tucker has confirmed that "Streaker" is a genuine contender for the number one jersey in Sunday's World Cup qualifier.

"We're taking a look at 'Streaker' and he's asked me to evaluate him," said Tucker. "He's one of the greats of not so long ago, so I've got to evaluate him. What he did before with the national team was incredible; everyone enjoyed watching him play.

"He's back on board and we'll be seeing if he still has the reflexes and flexibility. There's no doubt he's pushing for a place, as he's a winner. I certainly can't overlook the guy."

The sight of Adams flying between the posts in training yesterday would have no doubt been ominous for Bermuda's 'keeper fraternity.

And Tucker will have no qualms about selecting 'elder statesman' Adams, just as he had no hesitation in blooding teenagers Reggie Lambe and Nahki Wells against St. Kitts and Nevis.

"Dwayne's probably scared a couple of the youngsters because the name 'Streaker' means 'I've got to sit on the bench'," said Tucker. "Even if he doesn't play it's good to have him involved. Along with Timmy (Figuerido) he can really help bring along Jason (Williams) and Nigel (Burgess).

"He's the type of person you want with a group like this. He did a great job coaching North Village and he's the sort of guy I want to be part of the national team programme."

"I've known him for a long time as I was part of Mark Trott's coaching staff when Bermuda travelled to Costa Rica about ten years ago. Dwayne's an incredible keeper and has probably matured a little bit since then.

"I think Costa Rica beat us 5-0, but Streaker saved about twenty goals."

Adams, who made his debut for Bermuda as a substitute aged 16, won the Triple Crown as North Village coach during the 2005-6 season. During his career he has played for the Rams, Southampton Rangers and Charlotte Eagles in the US.
