<Bt-4z37>Table-topping Blazers face stiff test from Cougars

Premier Division football resumes this weekend with top-of-the-table Boulevard hosting red-hot Devonshire Cougars at BAA Field in tomorrow’s top clash.

Cougars came from behind and outscored Blazers 4-2 earlier this month in the Martonmere Cup group stage under floodlights at Somerset Cricket Club.

It proved to be a highly charged display of all-out attacking football with both teams throwing caution to the wind in search of superiority. And tomorrow’s clash at BAA should be no different as both clubs seek to keep their unbeaten league records intact.

Cougars, who qualified for a fourth overall Martonmere Cup final in midweek, currently trail leaders Boulevard by five points — but do have a game in hand over their urban rivals.

Blazers have proven to be one of the biggest surprises so far, having transformed from pretenders to serious contenders over the summer months.

Boulevard, however, will be without speedy forwards Ian Coke, Angelo Simmons and Dunn-ya Taylor who are due to return with the Island’s Under-20 national team tomorrow night.

This means team stalwarts Shaki Crockwell and Melchisedec Gibbons will have to pick up the slack in the trio’s absence.

Defensively, Blazers could also find their work cut out for them against of Cougars’ supreme trio of Domico Coddington, player/coach Kwame Steede and the mercurial Raymond Beach.

Beach has proven he can find the target with or without former side-kick Heys Wolfe, who transferred back to Dandy Town, having banged in seven goals in four matches so far.

Second-placed Paget Lions will play their first match in top flight football under the lights tonight when they travel West to meet Somerset Trojans.

Trojans had their Martonmere Cup bubble deflated earlier in the week when they were edged by perennial rivals PHC Zebras.

It was Trojans’ first defeat of the season, and one they’ll be looking to rebound from against Lions tonight.

Elsewhere tomorrow, PHC take their giant-slaying act to Bernard Park in hopes of grabbing points off defending champions Village who are not enjoying the best of starts this season.

Town, meanwhile, should rebound from Wednesday’s 5-0 hammering against Cougars and pick up their first league points of the season against St.David’s at the Barn.

In First Division action, leaders Ireland Rangers and Wolves will put their unbeaten streaks on the line when they lock horns at the Den, while second-placed Devonshire Colts are favoured over landlords Prospect United at Police Field.

Southampton Rangers are facing a tricky home tie against X Roads at Southampton Oval, Somerset Eagles should pick up a first win of the season against Hamilton Parish at White Hill Field, while St.George’s Colts host Social Club at Wellington Oval in a match that could go either way.
