'That was for Corey'
It was goal that was three years in the making, and one worth every minute of the wait.
“I just struck it and that was really it. I have been practising this sort of thing in training all week,” he said.
“When I got possession of the ball and saw the ‘keeper (Hendrickson) off his line I was able to beat him. I came here today thinking this was the biggest game of the year. And I scored a goal in the biggest game of my life. And so I guess it was the biggest goal of my career.”
Making the occasion all the more memorable was the fact Butterfield — son of former Somerset Trojans ‘keeper Wayne Butterfield — was sidelined through suspension when Cougars won a maiden Premier Division title in 2005.
“This is beautiful and really humbling because the last one (championship in 2005) there was a lot of trials and tribulations going on,” he said.
“This is what I worked for and I dedicate this goal and our championship to the memory of Corey Smith.”
Butterfield wears the same jersey as the late Cougars player, tragically killed in a road traffic accident a few years ago.
“Nobody else will wear this number when I retire,” he said.
“This (championship) is for Lefty and Funza and for all of the die-hards.”
