Top coach Cannonier hails local cricket camp

England and Wales Cricket Board (EWCB) coach George Cannonier has dubbed last week's Easter Cricket Camp at Lords a roaring success and now plans to make it an annual event.

The camp, designed for players aged seven to 15, was well attended with former Islanders player Cannonier impressed by the level of commitment shown by this year's participants.

"The kids learned a lot of the basics and were very enthusiastic," he said. "They had a lot of energy while the camp was very much appreciated by the parents. There was a lot of positive feedback, including requests for it to be held again in the summer."

Cannonier, who was assisted by St.David's leg spinner Del Hollis and equipment manager Will Brooks, said the main objective of the camp was to teach youngsters the basics of the game and was satisfied that was achieved over the course of the five-day event.

"The philosophy was to teach the fundamentals of cricket and the ABCs of sport in general," Cannonier said. "The main activities included speed and circuit training, throwing, batting and techniques as well as fielding, catching and running between the wickets and learning the basics rules of the game."

In addition, participants were taught the measurements of crease markings and shown development oriented cricket DVDs.

"The kids really learned a lot and came out with some pretty decent scores," Cannonier said. "I was very impressed."
