Top seeds Davydenko and Robredo suffer shock defeats

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) — Nikolay Davydenko and Tommy Robredo, the top two men's seeds at the Pilot Pen, were both upset in the third round yesterday, while a qualifier moved into the women's semi-finals.

Agnes Szavay defeated No. 8-seed Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 6-4.

It was the sixth match in seven days for Szavay, who began playing in the qualifying round last Friday. She advanced to the quarterfinals after upsetting second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova on Wednesday in the second round.

"I am very tired," she said. "If somebody would tell me before that I'm going to play the semi-final I would be really satisfied."

Davydenko, the defending Pilot Pen champion, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Gilles Simon of France.

The Russian, ranked fourth in the world, did not play his first match of the tournament until Wednesday night, but said he did not feel tired until after his third-round match with Simon.

"We played some long rallies, and he won all rallies," he said. "I was disappointed, because normally from baseline I get more control."

Tommy Robredo, ranked eighth in the world, also dropped his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

"Just two games on my serve that he played better than me and the match went out," he said

Fourth seed David Ferrer also lost, falling to Igor Andreev of Russia, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Only third-seeded James Blake advanced to the quarter-finals among the top seeds. He won after being down three match points in the second set to Agustin Calleri, a finalist here a year ago.

Blake, from nearby Fairfield, appeared beaten after losing the first set 3-6, getting down a break at 4-5 and trailing in the 10th game 40-love.

With the crowd behind him, Blake finally figured out how to return Calleri's serve and began making big shots, including a passing volley while sprinting to the net at 40-15, prompting someone in the crowd to scream, "Who's the fastest man in tennis?"'

After getting the break, Blake lost his next service game, but broke right back to force the tiebreaker, which he won 7-2. He won the third set 6-1.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Blake said. "It really helps my confidence to know that no matter what the score is, I can come back and play some of my best tennis, keep it going and round out that third set."

American Mardy Fish also made it to the quarter-finals by beating Jose Acasuso of Argentina 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0. He was to play Wawrinka last night.

Ivo Karlovic of Croatia also advanced, beating Thomas Johannson of Sweden, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. He was to play Andreev last night.

The men were forced to play two rounds yesterday, after rain washed out most of Tuesday's matches.
