Triathletes excel in Canada
Bermuda's young triathletes produced excellent performances in the prestigious Barrie Triathlon in Ontario, Canada yesterday. The group consisting of 12 members of the TRex Triathlon Club and three guest athletes picked up four podium finishes and numerous top ten finishes making a strong impression.
Leading the way was Gabriella Arnold who narrowly outsprinted Emma Barrett of Guelph to win the girls 10-11 age group over 150 metre swim,10km bike and 2km run by just one tenth of a second in 34 minutes, 10 seconds, having led from the start of the bike leg.
Justin Ferreira of the Tri Hedz Triathlon Club, Bermuda continued to show why he is considered one of Bermuda brightest triathlon prospects as he finished second in 32:42 in the Boys 10-11 age group even though he was at the younger end of the group.
Jazmine Outerbridge impressed in the Girls 12-13 age group against some very talented Ontario junior girl club triathletes recording easily the fastest run split to finish the 300 metre swim, 10km bike and 3km run in 35:58 for third place overall, just 30 seconds behind the winner.
David Lunn, competing in the Boys 12-13 age group clearly lacked race fitness and nursing a foot injury still managed a third place in 36:05.
Nathan Amaral produced another good all-round performance to finish fifth in the same age group in 37:10.
Brothers Giles and William Lorimer-Turner finished in 36:31 and 37:32 respectively to finish seventh and ninth in the Boys 10-11 Age Group whilst Kai Peters' 39:21 was good enough for eighth place in the Boys 12-13, a strong result as one of the youngest competitors in his group.
James Lorimer-Turner finished 11th in the same age group in 42:42 with Isabella Arnold 10th in the Girls 12-13 in 40:31. Isabel Thompson's 38:14 was good enough for seventh place in the Girls 11/12.
Martina Edney was another top ten finisher as she completed the 500 metre swim, 10km bike and 4km run in 53:22 to take eighth place in the Girls 14-15 age group. Guest competitor Zamari Outerbridge was handicapped by a fall on the bike but completed the same distances in 49:57 to finish 12th in the boys 14-15.
Rounding out the group were Padraic O'Shaughnessy who did well as a newcomer to the sport this year finishing the 8/9 age group in seventh place, while guest athlete Malikae Outerbridge was 22nd.
TRex coach Dave Morrison said he was pleased with the group's performance and noted that the Bermuda contingent made a big impact at the race.
