Well done to PHC and my old friend Kyle
I must start by congratulating my old friend Kyle Lightbourne and his PHC team for lifting the Martonmere Cup at the weekend. They've had a great start to the season and look like one of the teams to beat at the moment. Kyle has started to implement his style of play and his team looks very organised; certainly defensively I know they are particularly strong. I'd tipped Devonshire Cougars for the league title at the start of the season as they came out of traps like rabbits in the early stages of the Martonmere Cup.
But all credit to Kyle and Jack Castle who have turned PHC into contenders. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the season maps out.
From the Bermuda Hogges point of view I think it's encouraging to see Kyle enjoy success at the domestic level. As coach of the Hogges I guess he's under a bit of pressure to have a good season with PHC, otherwise he may leave himself open to criticism from some people. But he's already won the Martonmere Cup and currently PHC team are top of the table so it's good to see he's getting his just rewards.
I guess Kyle's success now puts a bit of pressure on both Paul Scope and myself. With me coaching one of North Village's youth sides and Paul at Commercial League outfit Robin Hood we've now got to try and match Kyle's success!
All three of us are heading to Florida for the USL AGM and will be looking to arrange the best possible fixtures for Hogges next season. We want to attract as many kids to the National Sports Centre as possible so we've looked at school holiday dates, as well as making sure we don't organise fixtures on the same day as Cup Match etc.
We've drawn up a guide and hopefully those dates will correspond with other teams being available. It promises to be a busy three days, including different presentations and seminars looking at various aspects of running a franchise.
But we'll definitely make time to watch Khano Smith in action for New England Revolution in the MLS Cup on Sunday. I think it's so important to have a Bermudian footballer playing at a top level, especially for the youngsters coming through.
It's healthy for them to be able to turn on the TV and see a guy they can relate to playing professionally and they can say 'hey, I know him' or 'he used to play for my team'. It shows them what's possible.
I'm sure there will be a lot of Bermudians tuning into watch the final and although Khano will be aware of that I'm sure he's just concentrating on the task ahead. I've got a feeling Khano's New England Revolution will finally do it this year. They've come close the last two years so they should have a lot of motivation and appetite. I've got my fingers crossed for them.
Along with the likes of David Bascome and John Barry Nusum (who play the Major Indoor Soccer League) Khano is flying the flag for Bermuda in the US and myself Paul and Kyle will certainly be cheering him on.
