West third in one-day tourney
Eric West shrugged off back spasms and having to deal with sluggish greens in breezy conditions to shoot an even par 72 and grab a share of third place honours in a Moonlightgolf.com Tour event in Apopka, Florida last week.
The 24-year-old Bermuda pro, who makes his European Challenge Tour/Tour de las Americas debut at the Colombia Masters in Bogota this week, endured another rollercoaster round which saw him card three birdies and three bogies at the 7,200-yard Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club.
West rolled in two birdies on the back nine, including one at the par-four 14th to go to one under for the round with four holes left to play.
But any thoughts he might have had of entering the clubhouse under par were cruelly dashed on the very next hole where he three-putted for bogey before a succession of pars coming in preserved a "decent round" of golf.
American Danny Renfro (69) won the one-day event by three shots.
"The course was not in very good condition and the greens were rolling very slow which made putting with my long putter very difficult," West told The Royal Gazette.
"It was also pretty windy and there were three par threes over 210 yards that played very tough."
It was West's third top three finish this year competing on the Moonlightgolf.com Tour in the Sunshine State.
"My overall game feels pretty good," he said. "But I have also been having back spasms which has not been fun. I've had to get therapy for that."
West now plans to work on his putting with world-renowned coach Mike Bender before teeing off in Colombia.
"Hopefully my back gets better by then and I can swing a driver," the Pembroke resident said. "I'm sure everything will be fine, though, and I'm looking forward to having a good experience down there."
