Wolves aim to bring Parish back down to earth
Much has already been said about First Division leaders Hamilton Parish in the aftermath of the club's maiden Premier's Dudley Eve Cup triumph at the National Sports Centre (NSC) earlier this week.
Hot Peppers continued their remarkable turnaround with victory over Southampton Rangers from the dreaded penalty spot in last Tuesday's absorbing final. But hardly before the dust has settled on the Crawl Hill club's recent success Parish find themselves facing a ticklish away fixture tomorrow at the Den against a Wolves team determined to spoil the party.
"We need this win. A win is a necessity to us," Wolves manager Robert Thomas declared. "We can't allow Parish to stretch their lead or Rangers, Eagles and St. David's to get away from us as well.
"Every game is a big game for us. . . . this is the mentality we have while our focus is on promotion."
Parish currently top the standings by five points over nearest rivals Rangers, Somerset Eagles and St. David's Warriors but can ill afford any slip-ups in their quest for the league title and promotion to the top tier next season when the 2007-08 campaign resumes.
And Hot Peppers won't need reminding of their second-half-of-the-season meltdown during the 2002-03 campaign which saw them squander a double-digit lead and then suffer the added humiliation of a 7-0 drubbing in the Shield Final at the hands of a Southampton Rangers outfit led by current Parish coach Meshach Wade.
Parish stalwart Leon Raynor still harbours those painful memories and therefore has urged his team-mates not to take anything for granted. "This is definitely a big match for us and we can never take Wolves for granted because over the years we have had some very exciting battles against them," he said.
Second-placed Rangers and fourth-placed St. David's should remain in the hunt after this weekend's round of matches.
Rangers travel to Police Field to take on eighth-placed Prospect United while Andrew Bascome's Warriors should find cellar dwellers Paget Lions easy pickings at Lords.
However, the same cannot be said for third-placed Eagles, who may find unpredictable St. George's Colts a difficult proposition in their own back yard at Wellington Oval.
Elsewhere, sixth-placed X Roads Warriors, who are only three points adrift of the second promotion spot, host winless BAA at Garrison Field, where a win for the home team coupled by a loss by any of the clubs above them could really stir things up at the top of the table.
Meanwhile, ninth-placed Social Club have a bye tomorrow while all Premier Division clubs have the luxury of another week to shake off the egg nog and cassava pie.
