Workmanlike Troicki through in straight sets
Viktor Troicki put in a workmanlike performance as he swept aside Franko Skugor in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
The Serbian took just an hour and 25 minutes to dispatch his opponent as he mixed a blend of drop shots at the net with deep, powerful forehand baseline winners.
"It was pretty tough to play today, it was quite windy," said Triocki. "I played a good match as a whole, so today was not really worrying."
A series of irrational strokes and a string of unforced errors led to Skugor losing the first set without really putting up a fight.
The match started brightly for Troicki as he broke Skugor's first service game and took an early 3-0 lead in the first set.
Skugor never seemed to get to grips with the unpredictable play of Troicki early on, but for all his problems he engineered a way back into the match with a break point.
However, his inability to turn chances into points saw him go down 4-1 and all but concede the opening set.
Troicki feasted on Skugor's serve and broke him again to make it 5-1 and eventually saw out the first set 6-1 after Skugor let his frustration be known by throwing his racquet.
The second set went the way of Triocki from the outset as he broke the Croatian's serve in the first game as Skugor double faulted to put him behind the eight ball again.
This seemed to knock the wind out of Skugor's sail with Troicki replying with venom, treating the crowd to an array of crowd-pleasing shots.
The match was over as a contest when Triocki broke Skugor's serve and went up 5-2, sealing the victory on his service game.
"I was consistent with my serve, and mixed things up a bit for him to keep him off balance. That was the key.
"I won pretty easy, which I am happy about. I'm going into the quarter-finals playing some good tennis so this is a bonus.
"We know each other pretty well, and we know what the other doesn't like.
"So I played the game that would win me the match and it paid off for me. "I felt good out there and I will look forward to seeing who is next for me."
