Young and Jones triumph over experience in men's doubles

Youth defeated experience at Coral Beach Tennis Club as the team of Donald Young and Greg Jones saw off the more experienced campaigners in Paul Capdeville and Robby Ginepri 6-3, 6-3 yesterday in the XL Bermuda Open.

The manner in which Young and Jones won the first set in the second round of the doubles was somewhat surprising.

They set the tone for the first set, breaking Capdeville's serve in the first game of the match and proceeded to stamp their authority on the clay court.

As the first set wore on the youngsters seemed to be coasting along as they ran out to a 5-1 lead.

Ginepri and Capdeville had no real answer for the questions the youngsters asked of them as unforced errors and lacklustre shot play prevented the pair from finding any rhythm.

But they managed to claw their way back to 5-3 and sowed a seed of doubt into the minds of the youngsters.

Young and Jones broke Capdeville's next service game and sealed the first set 6-3 after a few nervy moments.

It was a sign of things to come, as the second set resembled a chess match with both sides plotting and planning each stroke and holding serve at 2-2.

In the sixth game of the second set the youngsters broke their more experienced counterparts, taking the score to 4-2.

And with the breakthrough made, the pair set upon finishing what many thought was going to be an easy task, considering the first four games of the match.

Capdeville and Ginepri held serve to make and 5-3 and apply pressure to their young opponents.

Yet nerves were not evident in the clinching game as youth and energy prevailed.

"It was a tough match," said Young. "I don't know how hard they were trying but it was tough to keep our game up. But we got the job done and won the match in the end.

"I'm just happy to get the w."

"It was a strange match," said Jones. "We were cruising along early but then let them back into the match later on.

"It was good to hold on and close it out and get through to the next round.

With this being the first time the two youngsters have teamed up, the two might make this a regular occurrence.

"This was our first time playing together, so it was good to get this game under our belts," Young continued.

"If we play at the same events, you never know, we might team up more often."
