Youngsters win again to top group
Bermuda 3 Suriname 0
Bermuda Under-15s finished top of their group in the Caribbean Football Union Cup after breezing past Suriname — ahead of this weekend's quarter-final showdown with hosts Trinidad.
Both Bermuda and Suriname had already qualified for last eight of the tournament, so it was no surprise a number of first-choice players were left on each bench.
But it was Bermuda who claimed the battle of the bragging rights with Zeiko Lewis bagging a brace on three and 17 minutes, while Anthony Hunter completed the rout on 30 minutes.
Coach Mark Wade admitted the fixture was somewhat of a 'dead-rubber' but was buoyed both Lewis and Hunter found their scoring boots, with much of the goalscoring responsibility resting on skipper Dante Leverock's shoulders.
"We've relied to heavily on Dante (Leverock) for our goals and I was delighted two other players opened their accounts — that bodes well for our quarter-final game.
"The game was understandably played at a slow pace with both countries already in the last eight — it wasn't a great performance. But we were able to shuffle our starting line-up and rest a few players as well as finish top of our group. To be fair they also fielded a weakened team."
The colts are next in action against much-fancied Trinidad on Sunday and Wade is expecting a much tougher encounter having twice scouted the host's during the competition.
"We have watched them play a couple of times in the and know they're a good side — but we've seen certain areas we know we can exploit," he said. "We now have a couple of days rest and recuperation and should be fresh for Sunday."
The youngsters, also coached by Ray Jones, got their campaign off to a fine start with a 3-0 win against St. Kitts last weekend with Leverock scoring twice and Troy Tucker also finding the net. They followed up that victory with a 2-1 win against St. Vincent, courtesy of a double from that man Leverock.
Reaching the quarter-finals had been the colts' brief from the Bermuda Football Association (BFA), but coach Wade has challenged his side to claim the coveted trophy.
