Americans grab lead

fourth to first following the second day's play in the Ladies Invitation Golf Tournament currently being held at Mid Ocean Golf Club.

Going into today's third and final round they have a three stroke advantage over first round co-leaders Carol Hammond, of Bermuda, and Canadian Diana Ross-Ross in the net division.

Yesterday witnessed a blistering performance by the pair, who carded the best score of the tournament to date, a splendid round of 60, which beat by four strokes the 64 recorded by Hammond and Ross-Ross on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the latter combination slipped to 68 on the day, but nowhere was a decline so great as that involving Judy Kitson and Maisie Barlow, who almost slipped completely off the leader-board after ballooning to a 71.

Second, and two strokes off the pace entering the morning's play, Kitson and Barlow now lie sixth, with a mammoth 10 shots separating them from the leaders.

Two teams are tied for third place, including former co-leaders Claudette Gottsegen and Enid Baker (66), on 134, and Bea Williams and Brenda Helmer (70).

Americans Zita Legere and Patricia Sheehan (68) stand alone in fifth at 135.

In addition to leading the net category, Madden and Bennett also find themselves on top in the gross section, although they have company, with Shirley Wildi and Frankie Stearns posting an equal two round total of 149.

Next in line at 152 are Ivy Rosser and Ginette Spinucci followed by Jamie Bacon and Mary Ross, grouped with Diana Diel and Karen Oldham on 153 with just today's final round left to play.

Chris Garland continues to lead the race for the Glidden Bowl junior golf tournament at Belmont.

Despite slipping to an 82 yesterday during the second round, the youngster has a five stroke lead over Jamie Nelmes, his nearest competitor in the over-15 age bracket at 160.

However, he is being pressed by 13-14 group player Robert Spurling, who is tied with the older members after a round of 81.

Spurling is also eleven shots ahead of Michael Sims, who managed a 83 for a two round total of 167.

Meanwhile, Neil Fenton (65) stands at the top of the boys under 12 group at 140, while Sarah Lindo (73) heads the girl's list on 146.
