Jane Christie by four seconds to win the inaugural PartnerRe Women's 5K road race yesterday.

The first all-women's race in more than a decade attracted an amazing 165 runners and walkers, prompting race director Rose Jones to suggest that more of the same could follow.

"It was a terrific turn-out -- far more than we expected,'' said Jones, who organised the event on behalf of the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club.

"Hopefully, this will now be an annual race and we will see more events like this. It was great to see the number of families who took part, mothers and daughters, and sisters.'' But while the field was big in numbers, it lacked depth with only Eatherley and top Master Christie recognised among the Island's leading female runners.

Among the no shows were recent Evian ten mile winner Lynn Patchett, Maria Conroy Haydon, Karen Adams and Alison Cameron.

Eatherley made the most of their absence to win in 20 minutes and 14 seconds, followed closely by Christie in 20:18. Penelope Butterfield was a distant third in 21:31.
