remarkable performance at a tournament in New Jersey this week.

The 12-year-old, playing in the 16-and-under age group, has reached the semi-finals of the Southern Regional Championships at Elmwood Park.

On the way she knocked out number two seed Ayumi Yamazaki 6-2, 6-2.

When rain stopped the semi-final, Brooks had the upper hand. Brooks won the first set 6-4, but her opponent Alexandra Glickman levelled the match by taking the second set 7-5. Brooks was 3-0 up in the third and deciding set.

Earlier this month, Brooks beat one of Georgia's top juniors, Jennifer Meredith, to win the under-14 title at the Port Royal junior tournament.

And she followed that up with victories over more young American players to win both the 12-and-under and 14-and-under titles at the Minute Maid Junior Open at the Tennis Stadium last week.

Ashley's mother, Kim Brooks, said she was thrilled with her daughter's progress.

"I could hardly believe it myself, when she said she had beaten the number two seed in the under-16s,'' said Mrs. Brooks.

"She was invited to take part in the tournament by Doug Golden, who had been impressed by her results in the Georgia State Open in Atlanta.'' Brooks has been playing tennis for only three years and has been coached by Sheila Gomez and Ricky Mallory.

More of the Island's young tennis talent enjoyed success overseas this week.

Sasha Fisher yesterday reached the final of the International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament in Trinidad, defeating second seed Laura Marin 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Fisher was 3-0 down in the second set of the semi-final and looked to be heading for defeat, but rallied to win.

Fisher beat sixth seed Katrina Mayer in the quarter-finals 7-5, 6-4, having earlier beaten Sarah Costello, 6-3, 6-3.

Zoe Fisher went out in the last eight, 6-4, 6-1 to top seed H. Ann Johnson of Antigua in a hard fought match, after defeating Danielle Cosgrove of Trinidad 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16.

Johnson will face Sasha in today's final.

And Kara Fisher got the better of Grenada's Sernaca Edwards 6-4, 6-0, before going down in the round of 16, 7-6, 6-4 in a tight encounter with third-seeded Tassia Weedon.
