BAA turn to veteran Brewster in upset

should they be promoted, of course -- can be determined to some degree tomorrow when promotion candidates Devonshire Cougars, BAA and Wolves take on top-flight opposition in the first round of the FA Cup.

And like Commercial Division teams Robin Hood and Exiles, they are hoping an upset is on the cards in a competition that is known to throw up the unexpected result or two.

"Football is a funny game and the ball can roll anywhere,'' is how BAA coach Johnny Adams prefers to look at his team's clash with neighbours Dandy Town.

The Greens will be without six starters for their home clash but have the luxury of calling up members of their Commercial Division team, BAA Wanderers, according to rules governing the FA Cup.

"We're going to start with Frankie Brewster, who's still strong,'' Adams is quick to acknowledge of his 44-year old former team-mate who is also a former Bermuda international.

"He's lost a yard of pace but he won't look out of place on the field. Win, lose or draw he'll be one of the better players on the park. It's too bad we couldn't have him in the Second Division.'' BAA will have to reshuffle their front line because of the absence of Duncan Ashworth (off the Island), Clevie Crichlow (injured) and Michael Scott who is unavailable.

To go with that, Wayne DeSilva and Gary Flood are both injured, while Robert Pacheco will also be missing. One plus is that Norman Correia has returned from suspension to partner Brewster in the middle of the defence.

The BAA midfield will contain 17-year-old captain Paul Franco, Dan Cherico, who Adams describes as "a great competitor and the heart of the midfield'', Michael Richardson and possibly Robert Clementino.

The full-backs in front of goalkeeper Philip Bolton are Stephen Gear at left-back and Daniel Stovell on the right.

"We lost last week to Devonshire Cougars, which is the poorest we've played all season, but we can't let one bad result bring us down,'' said Adams.

Despite Town's own slump lately, Adams has full respect for his opponents who he describes as one of the better teams in the First Division. But he said the pressure is on them as the favourites.

"They (Town) are going through a sticky patch but I'm afraid they will come out of that sticky patch against us,'' said Adams.

"They are obviously one of the better teams and will be the favourites. But the FA is a great leveller and anything can happen.

"If we defend strong and don't give away silly goals we will be in with a chance. What we have to do is put a lot of pressure on their goalkeeper.'' Leaders Cougars and Wolves, third, also have tough matches with Cougars at home to Southampton Rangers and Wolves travelling to Bernard Park to take on North Village.

Cougars are capable of springing a surprise against struggling Rangers and they, along with Somerset Eagles, are the more likely of the Second Division teams to advance to the quarter-finals.

Even so, Eagles will not have things their own way when they take on an Exiles team who have already knocked out Second Division side Port Royal.

Another team from the Commercial Division, Robin Hood, who once reached the semifinals of the FA Cup, take on First Division team Vasco in the opening match at BAA field.

For the third straight year, Somerset will take on First Division opposition in the first round when they travel to St. David's to meet cup holders Boulevard in the day's top match.

Two seasons ago the Trojans went crashing out in a 4-0 loss to Hotels while last season they reached the semifinals after beating St. George's in the first round and St. David's in the quarter-finals.

Those two teams battle at Wellington Oval when St. David's go in search of their first win of the season against a St. George's team who are unbeaten at home.

The remaining match tomorrow sees Devonshire Colts at home to PHC at Frog Lane field.

All matches have been brought forward a half-hour in the case of extra time being required. The opening match at BAA field will kick off at 12.30 p.m.

while the remaining seven matches will begin at 2.30 p.m.

CAN IT BE? -- BAA are hopin that scenes, such as this from Aprils Shield final win over Prospect, can be recaptured against Dandy Town in the FA Cup tomorrow.
