Bascome earns singles chance

Jenson Bascome will get his chance in singles today as Bermuda Davis Cup captain Steve Bean plans a change of line-up against Bolivia.

The 21-year-old Bascome has impressed Bean sufficiently in his opening two doubles matches, when he partnered Ricky Mallory, to convince the skipper to try him in place of Donald Evans in the singles.

Evans, who is in his mid-30s, suffered from exhaustion during his defeat by Scott Willinsky yesterday and may be asked to partner Mallory in doubles if he feels fit enough today.

Pending the outcome of a team meeting last night, Bascome will be first on today for the Island, with James Collieson playing the second singles rubber.

"Jenson's been playing very well in doubles,'' said Bean. "The guy's only 21 years-old and we need to get him out there on the singles court.

"I can see him and James carrying the team in singles for the next few years.

And I don't expect Donald and Ricky, who are both in their mid-30s, to keep playing singles.

"Donald was exhausted today and he just reached the point where he could not go any more, so we asked for a medical time-out.

"We might play Ricky and Donald in the doubles, but Ricky and Jenson have been playing so well together that we might ask Jenson to repeat.'' Bean has been a long-time mentor to Bascome, and he believed he had taken well to the grind and tension of Davis Cup tennis.

"I've been training him since he was a young boy and he's smart,'' said Bean.

"Even at such a young age he's shows what a smart guy he is in the doubles. A lot of young guys will just hit it as hard as they can, but he knows the angles to play.'' Jenson Bascome: Expected to replace Donald Evans in the singles for today's Davis Cup clash against Bolivia in Cuba.
