Bermuda bowling takea a beating

Bermuda suffered another shellacking yesterday when Jamaica defeated them by 144 runs in their second tour game at Kaiser Park in a 50 overs game at Discovery Bay.

The agonising result follows an opening loss on Wednesday when Jamaica soundly defeated Bermuda by nine wickets at the famous Test ground at Sabina Park in Kingston.

With their spirits obviously shaken after being convincingly beaten twice, Bermuda now have sufficient time to regroup and concentrate on restoring lost pride and confidence in time for their next match which could be on Monday against Premier Division champions Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston. This added fixture is expected to be confirmed today.

Just as in Wednesday's match Jamaica yesterday feasted on the visitor's modest pace attack, while Bermuda -- who made five changes to Wednesday's team -- were hesitant in the face of inspired bowling by the home side led by leg-break bowler Robert Haynes who snatched five wickets for a mere 13 runs off 10 overs, including three maidens.

Clay Smith, omitted from the squad the previous day, stood up best, with his undefeated 38 -- which came off 67 balls and included five fours -- being the highlight for Bermuda in reply. Opening batsman Dexter Smith hit 21 off 91 balls while his partner Allan Richardson scored 16 and veteran Noel Gibbons 12.

Charlie Marshall was able to play after an x-ray proved negative after he was struck on the head Wednesday. He scored a duck and was one of Haynes' victims.

It was the leg-break spin bowling of Haynes and Bryan Murphy combined with the off-break spin of Nehemiah Perry that tore the heart out of Bermuda's batting.

The trio were dominated from the 17th over to the 44th over, taking total command from the moment Haynes was brought into the attack when he had Richardson bowled in his first over.

Earlier Jamaica won the toss and took advantage of an easy batting wicket before a good crowd that included many Bermuda residents visiting in the nearby Montego Bay area.

Inspired by a fine undefeated knock of 67 by Haynes, the Jamaica batsmen really went on the attack when the score was 175 eight after 45 overs and the Bermuda bowlers, Kenny Phillips and Noel Gibbons in particular, suffered from an onslaught by Haynes and skipper Courtney Walsh over the last five overs.

CLAY SMITH -- Led Bermuda's batting with an undefeated 38 against Jamaica.
