Bermuda hope luck of Irish on their side
the ICC Trophy Tournament in Kenya with a victory over Ireland in their group E match today.
Bermuda, who on Wednesday defeated Canada by eight wickets, enjoyed the day off, but remained fully conscious of how close they are to advancing to the next group of four.
The combination of a Bermuda triumph and a similar result for other favourites United Arab Emirates would ensure the movement of both into the semifinals.
United Arab Emirates today take on Canada in a game they should win without much difficulty. The talent-laden Middle East nation defeated Ireland by 53 runs on Wednesday and losses by either Canada or Ireland would mathematically eliminate them from contention.
Things were relatively quiet in Bermuda's camp yesterday, but one player, opening batsman Dexter Smith, is dealing with a shoulder ailment. Smith is the team's most prolific scorer to date.
The left hander is also one of the tournament's highest overall scorers, averaging upwards of 70 runs every time he takes the crease.
Smith took the time to receive work on his left triceps muscle -- the muscle on the back of the upper arm -- after feeling a twinge during the early part of the tour after making a snap throw to the wicket in training.
He has undergone daily ultrasound treatment as well as electro-therapy, but has indicated that the ailment is nothing serious and certainly not something that would keep him from playing against Ireland today.
He also noted how the team has come together and is confident of their ability to advance.
"I think that now we've come to the stage where we really believe in ourselves,'' said Smith last night from Nairobi.
"If there was any uncertainty it was in the Hong Kong match where we were 66-4 overnight and battled back to tie and win by having lost less wickets.
From then on our confidence was restored.''
