Bromby eyes top 10 finish

and crew Lee White are in with a shot of a top 10 finish going into today's final race in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Yesterday he turned in another solid performance by placing fifth to lie 11th overall.

"Realistically speaking, we don't have a chance of winning the overall competition even if we win the last race. A win today (Friday) would not have helped us because of the huge points spread that the top sailors have over us,'' he said.

Bromby added: "But our chances of moving further up the tables is possible because we have a few other sailors within striking distance. We are just hoping to continue to improve.'' He tips American John Kostecki to win the competition with another American Mark Reynolds, the Olympic gold medallist, finishing second overall. Kostecki was third yesterday while Reynolds finished fourth just ahead of Bromby.

"Going into this last race Reynolds is going to have to do well and in turn hope that Kostecki slips significantly to stand any chance of winning,'' said Bromby.

Yesterday's race was won by Peter Wright of Australia while Allan Adler of Brazil finished second.

"We were doing pretty good under the medium conditions that prevailed. On the last run of the final beat we moved into second place, then midway down the run we fell back to third and eventually slipped further back when Kostecki and Reynolds overtook us,'' explained Bromby.

While he and new crew Lee White intend to do their utmost to improve on their overall position going into today's final race, Bromby is already hailing the performance of the team as a great success.

"The results of this regatta proves that we are getting better as the races go by, we are going from strength to strength and that is a good sign.'' Bromby added that there was a possibility that Tuesday's sixth-place finish, which was thrown out because of a protest, may be reinstated. "There is a sign that this may happen, but we won't know anything further about it until tomorrow,'' he said.
