Canaries clear at the top
the team to beat after four straight victories in ladies' hockey at Nationals.
Canaries edged Swifts 2-1 on the weekend although Swifts threatened to pull off an upset.
Canaries dominated for the first five minutes but then their opponents took over. Midway through the first half Erica Frith passed to sister Kim at the top of the circle and her first time pass found the unmarked Chrisanthi Bartley who slotted the ball home.
In the second half, Swifts goalkeeper Jennah Robinson, who was having an outstanding game, committed a foul on Rhonda Rawlins which resulted in a penalty stroke. Rawlins' shot rocketed inside the left post to draw Canaries even.
The league leaders scored what turned out to be the winner 10 minutes from time when Lisa DeSilva converted Rawlins' rebounded shot, scoring her sixth goal of the new season. In the final minute Bartley had two more shots on goal but Canaries' goalie was up to the challenge.
In another A Division match, second-placed Cardinals and bottom team Bluebirds drew 2-2 with all the goals coming in the second half.
Maria Pichery fed Jessica Sousa who netted Cardinals' first. And their second goal came as a result of Edna-Mae Tuzo's pass to Laura Bardgett. But Bluebirds fought back to even the score.
In the B Division, Canaries defeated Swifts 4-0 and league leaders Cardinals edged Bluebirds 1-0 with Jessica Sousa scoring the winner from the top of the circle in the second half.
