Cann double earns Town revenge

Beaten by Vasco 2-1 last Wednesday in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Dandy Town exacted their revenge at BAA Field on Saturday night, keeping alive their slim hopes of the Premier Division title.

Town played with spirit, fight and determination from the outset, showing that they intend to be competitive in the league race until the death.

Vasco on the other hand looked jaded, reflecting their midtable position where they are not quite clear of relegation but with no hope of challenging for the title that they retained a year ago.

Town's goals came from Carlos Smith and Paul Cann (two) while Jamal Smith netted for Vasco.

Town dominated play during the first 20 minutes but had little to show for their impressive work -- most of their build-ups initiated by the hard work in midfield of Cann, Devarr Boyles and Kris Martin while several others put shots high and wide.

After 22 minutes they had their best scoring chance when Smith quickly turned and unleashed a fierce drive that forced goalkeeper Timmy Figureido to dive to his left and tip the ball over the bar.

Vasco slowly got back into the game and their first chance came after 25 minutes when Kuma Smith's free kick from 19 yards saw goalkeeper Jason Smith dive smartly to collect.

Town finally got some reward for their superior workrate after 36 minutes when they took the lead. Vasco centre back Diallo Sharrieff took a short goal clearance from Figureido but a lapse by the big defender enabled Smith to rob him of possession inside the box and easily push the ball past the stranded and surprised 'keeper.

Vasco, however. finished off the half strongly with Town centre back Lloyd Christopher forced to head off the goal-line and Sharrieff left watching in agony as his firm header from a Keith Jennings corner hit the post.

There was further misery for Vasco after 48 minutes when forward Clay Smith missed a sitter, placing his effort wide from just nine yards.

Town responded with Dean Bailey and Raymond Beach each powering shots just over the bar from outside the penalty box.

With little happening up front, Vasco substituted their two front men Smith and Dwight Basden who had received little support from the midfielders.

Town, continuing to play with more urgency and purpose, went ahead 2-0 after 75 minutes when Cann raced through a dazed defence to score from 12 yards.

Vasco pulled one back three minutes later through substitute Jamal Smith who steered the ball home after a Jennings corner.

However, before Vasco could do any further damage the hard-working Cann hammered home Town's third after a cross from the left.

Sharrieff came close to making amends for his early blunder when his powerful header from a Jennings free kick hit the chest of goalkeeper Smith who somehow managed to hold on.
