Carr runs over defending champ
Championships with victory over Cy Kilgore in the clash of former winners at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
Carr, who works for the Island's marine police and won the title two years ago, defeated defending champion Kilgore four and three.
Today Carr faces a tough-looking quarter-final match against Florida one-handicapper Gunnar Bennett, who beat Phillips Saylor three and two.
And if Carr gets past that barrier and into the last four, he could face the same man he beat in the 1997 final, Mark Dupuy, later today.
But first Island resident Dupuy, who yesterday beat Bill Jenks two and one, would have to get past Canadian Jack Scrymgeour, who put out George Walker five and four.
Scrymgeour's son, 18-year-old Luke Scrymgeour, continued his impressive run of form this week with a three-and-two victory over Dave Purcell and this morning faces Scott Maxie, who beat Frank Keener at the first extra hole.
Carr said yesterday's strong winds had forced him to adopt a safety-first approach.
"It was so windy out there, we were just trying to keep the ball in play -- it was just a matter of survival really and there weren't many birdies to be had,'' said Carr. "Cy played well and was unlucky at times. On the fourth green the wind blew the ball back to his feet from 12 feet.
"I'm definitely in a strong bracket of the draw, but that's not what it's about. It's about playing against one man. I enjoy match play, it frees me up and you can take a few risks.'' Australian Roy Vandersluis, runner-up twice in the early 1980s, who has made a sucessful return to the tournament after more than a decade's absence, will contest today's remaining quarter-final against Port Royal general manager Max Atherden.
Yesterday Vandersluis beat Philip Fulghum seven and six, while Atherden came through a tight match to win one-up against Richard Neame.
Jennifer Spurling, an 18-year-old member of Bermuda Junior Golf Association and the youngest woman in the ladies championship flight field, has made it through to the final.
Her six-and-five victory over Carol Hammond sets up a clash for the title today with Lela Stearns, who beat Molly McNicholls at the first extra hole.
